Countermeasure
  • That form of military science which by the use of devices and techniques has as its objective the impairment of the operational effectiveness of enemy activity. (AR 380-380;)
  • Technical or procedural measure taken to stop a threat.
  • Any action, device, procedure, technique, or other measure that reduces the vulnerability of an ADP system or activity to the realization of a threat. (OPNAVINST 5239. 1A;; NCSC-WA-001-85;)
  • An act, device, procedure, etc. , that may be used in one or more of the three protective areas: detection, prevention and recovery. To be effective, the countermeasure should be complete, correct, and self-protecting. Also called a mechanism. (RM;)
  • Any thing that effectively negates an adversary's ability to exploit vulnerabilities. *A design or procedural measure taken in defense against a security threat or vulnerability (DoD, System Security Engineering Program Management Requirements, MIL-STD 1785, 9/89)
