Fiber Optics
  • The branch of optical technology concerned with the transmission of radiant power through fibers made of transparent materials such as glass (including fused silica) or plastic.
  • Note 1: Telecommunications applications of fiber optics employ flexible low-loss fibers, using a single fiber per information channel(s).
  • Note 2: Various industrial and medical applications employ (typically high-loss) flexible fiber bundles in which individual fibers are spatially aligned, permitting optical relay of an image, such as in an endoscope.
  • Note 3: Some specialized industrial applications employ rigid (fused) aligned fiber bundles for image transfer, such as in the fiber optics faceplate used on some high-speed oscilloscopes.
