  • One-bit field that is either set (1) or not set (1).
  • In data transmission, an indicator, such as a signal, symbol, character, or digit, used for identification. Note: An example is a word mark, a group mark, or letter that signals the occurrence of some condition or event such as the end of a word or block. See also block, character, word.
  • n. A variable or quantity that can take on one of two values; a bit, particularly one that is used to indicate one of two outcomes or is used to control which of two things is to be done. "This flag controls whether to clear the screen before printing the message. " "The program status word contains several flag bits. " Used of humans analogously to bit. See also hidden flag, mode bit.
